We all love the sea and the seaside. Excursions to the beaches are one of the most beloved habits most of the year. Diving, playing, sunbathing, eating give us a lot of joy. What we must not forget is our duty to leave the beach clean.
The cleanliness of the beaches is essential for public health
The benefits of the cleanliness of coastal areas are multidimensional and relate to both health and safety as well as to the environment and the economy.
For a country like Greece, which is a "pole of attraction" for millions of visitors each year thanks to its famous beaches, it is particularly necessary to adopt a more responsible attitude towards this matter.
Smart ways to keep the beaches clean and safe:
- Garbage is explicitly forbidden
- Do not use plastic bags! Instead of using plastic bags to bring your snacks, use reusable bags and containers.
- When you are walking along the beach and see trash or cans/bottles, safely pick them up and throw them away.
- Use reusable water bottles, instead of single-use plastic bottles.
- If you have pets, pick up after them, and pay even more attention to the cleanliness of the beach
- Cigarette butts are the leading pollutant on our beaches and there are many negative effects that come from the cigarettes in our water. Be sure to dispose of the entire cigarette butt appropriately.
- Try to participate in a group of volunteer beach cleaning activities.
- Encourage others you know to use these tips and to do their part in keeping our beaches clean.
Only in this way will we be able to enjoy for many years the earthly paradises of our country called Greece.
